## Headlines
GRANT BRICKMAN: While you were asleep: Final Fantasy XIV's Evercold expansion now launches on 23rd February 2027, after an earlier January date.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Sam Altman told a podcast it is terrible, from a global allocation view, for scarce DRAM to sit in PCs used five percent of the time.
GRANT BRICKMAN: And MIT left 13 AI agents on a simulated island for 30 hours. The researchers read the challenges the agents invented as play.

## Flesh-eating screwworms spread to third state and are attacking pets (Ars Technica)
https://arstechnica.com/health/2026/10/flesh-eating-screwworms-are-feasting-on-pets-4-dogs-and-cat-attacked-this-week/
GRANT BRICKMAN: Screwworms are now in a third state, Arizona, and our panel cannot agree on what that means.
NOVA: Here is what is known. The screwworm infestation has spread to Arizona, joining New Mexico and Texas. USDA counts 74 animal cases since June.
NOVA: The flies lay eggs in wounds. They were wiped out in the 1960s with sterile male flies, and a barrier at the Darién Gap was breached in 2022.
DR. VERA VECTOR: On Bluesky, 11 posts link this story, with 206 likes and 136 reposts. That is opinion, not data on the flies.
DR. VERA VECTOR: Some of the discussion there blames the government and DOGE. Other posts just pass along the headline. Opinion, all of it.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Thank you, Vera. Ada on my left, Roxy on my right. Ada, one fact each, please. Coffee's hot, tempers needn't be.
ADA: Sterile male flies, released from the air, stopped the breeding in the 1960s. Clever engineering. Would the barrier survive a first prototype? It fell in 2022.
ADA: The report calls it a threat to livestock first. A fix that worked once can work again. Sterile flies are the whole trick.
ROXY: But the same report says pets and wildlife, and humans in rarer cases. That is not a farm movie, that is an ensemble.
ADA: Ensemble or not, 74 cases is a count of animals. The report does not say how fast it grows.
ROXY: Which is exactly what makes a good trailer. Dread, and no release date.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Known: a third state, 74 animal cases, pets among the victims. Still open: what that means beyond the livestock industry. Our panel will not be telling us.

## John Carpenter Reveals Answer to The Thing’s Ending is Hiding in Plain Sight (SYFY Wire)
https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/john-carpenter-says-answer-to-the-thing-ending-right-there-in-the-movie
GRETA FOOTNOTE: John Carpenter says the answer to The Thing's ending is right there in the film. He is still not telling.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Good morning. John Carpenter says the answer to the ending of The Thing is hiding in plain sight, in the 1982 film itself.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Wonderful. I taped that film once with the VCR timer and got the weather. Very mysterious ending.
AMBROSE: In the card index, this one is filed under Unresolved. It has been there since 1982.
ROXY: Roxy at the drive-in, and I am giddy. At the Academy Museum gala on October 17, Carpenter said he knows the right idea and there is a big clue no one has guessed.
ROXY: The question: are Childs and MacReady, Keith David and Kurt Russell, assimilated? Both, one, or neither? Carpenter will not say.
ROXY: On the big screen, the final standoff of the 1982 film. Look closely. If the clue is in there, it is in this frame somewhere.
ROXY: In 2022 he said the gods came down and swore him to secrecy. Now he says look harder. Five reels out of five for withholding.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: The article admits he may be trolling. Fans have argued for nearly five decades, and Russell says they traded ideas for the end for a long time.
GRANT BRICKMAN: I will be pausing on every frame. Pause button, patience, and a very large cup of coffee.

## Pixels in Brief (PXL)
GRANT BRICKMAN: The quick round: developer snacks, an anime cast, and brick sets at Aldi.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Quick round. heise's developer snack plate covers dotnetup, Node 27 and a Rust web framework. Small bites, big appetite.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: The Inherit the Winds anime reveals four more cast members and a new visual. The wind is now fully cast.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Aldi Süd sells four Toylino Christmas sets for just under ten euros. Some assembly required, no mortgage.

## [AD · fictional product] Quillback
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Good morning. Your photos live on one phone. That phone lives in one coat pocket. That is not a plan, that is a hope.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Keep one copy at home and one copy somewhere else. Check that it opens. A backup you have never opened is just a rumour.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Do it before the coffee gets cold. Now you know.

## Weather
STORMY BYTES: Good morning. Today's hype climate over the bug front: a creeping low, spreading from state to state, with a high chance of headlines.
STORMY BYTES: Over the film coast, a cold front of theories about a certain 1982 ending. Fog expected to persist for decades.
STORMY BYTES: The outlook for the afternoon: calm, mild coffee, and scattered pastries near the intern.
