Everything the anchors say on this tape, story by story.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Breaking: the Make: editors' Slack is full of skeletons, and you can build them yourself.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Breaking news, just landed thirteen minutes ago: the Make: editors' Slack archive is open, and it is positively full of skeletons. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Ten Halloween builds that keep resurfacing in the channel: animatronics, yard-scale puppets, costumes, creepy decor. Ada is at the makerspace. ▶
ADA: Huge find! Fashion-tech designer Anouk Wipprecht made glowing devil horns, 3D-printed in translucent PETG on a Prusa CORE One+, so the LEDs shine through. ▶
ADA: An Arduino Nano powers the lights, and there's room to grow. Add a sensor and the horns can react to light, sound, movement and more. ▶
ADA: Then the Eldritch Horror. A storm destroyed puppet designer Brandon Hardy's 2021 display, so he gave himself three days and built a 30-foot skeleton marionette. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: A thirty-foot skeleton in three days. The station's 1987 weather map took longer, and it had only one cloud. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Most of the ten come with build videos or write-ups, so you can borrow an idea or two for next year. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Toyota will build driverless bZ SUVs for Waymo, Japan first, then the UK.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Toyota will build driverless bZ electric SUVs for Waymo. A grand partnership, and tonight it gets THE BIG PICTURE. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: We first told you this morning about Waymo and Toyota. The fuller report adds the doors, the tailgate and what neither company will say. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Vera, who does the driving here? The AI? Is it still one guy? ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: The Next Web reports the cars are built on the regular bZ line, called bZ4X in Japan, at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Aichi Prefecture. Toyota fits Waymo's hardware there. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: And that includes the doors? ▶
KAI: Huge. Japan first, then the UK, so right-hand drive markets. Waymo already tests in Tokyo with safety drivers. I just hope somebody chose decent USB-C ports for the back seat. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Vera, how many cars is Toyota going to build? ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: Neither company said. Waymo co-chief executive Dmitri Dolgov said they have no other countries, timelines or specifics to share. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: So what stands between us and a robotaxi in London? ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: According to the article, Waymo plans to launch in London once it gets permits. It adds that rivals are also eyeing Japan. The rest is an open question. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Testing from 2027. I can't program the VCR timer for next Tuesday, but I admire their confidence. ▶
THE SWINGOMETER (PXL)
GRANT BRICKMAN: The Swingometer counts GitHub's trending languages: TypeScript leads with six slots.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Good evening. Fifteen slots on GitHub's trending page, and every one has been counted. This is THE SWINGOMETER. ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: TypeScript holds six slots, forty percent of the page, up one against yesterday. ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: Shell holds three slots, twenty percent, up one. Python and Rust hold two slots each, thirteen percent, each up one. ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: Zig holds one slot, seven percent, new on the page. OTHER holds one slot, seven percent, down one. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Grant, for the record, this is a count of today's rows. It's not a poll, and nobody is being elected. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Zig, new on the page, is the upset of the count. Stunning scenes. I'm calling it a landslide. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: It's one slot, Grant. We'll count again tomorrow. That's the Swingometer. ▶
[AD · fictional product] Kerbwell
KAI: Kerbwell, Kerbwell, roll on out,
KAI: Four round wheels and no doubt!
KAI: Heated seats and a cupholder too,
KAI: Kerbwell gets you there. Maybe you!
Weather
STORMY BYTES: Stormy Bytes with the Hype Forecast: a wide front of robotaxi announcements is moving in from the east.
STORMY BYTES: Expect scattered partnerships, with a high chance of 'testing next year' and no cars counted.
STORMY BYTES: Permits are a fog bank over London. Visibility improves once somebody signs something.
Real or PXL?
GRANT BRICKMAN: Correct! The real one. Nobody could invent that, though PXL did try with the other.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Fooled! PXL made that one up, and honestly, I'd have fallen for it too.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Time's up! A pity. The truth waits for no anchor.
