GRANT BRICKMAN: OpenAI copies Anthropic's homework: subscription tiers now come with API credits. AXIOM asks the street.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Good morning. Two AI companies, one very similar price list. Our AI correspondent AXIOM is on the street to ask what credits mean to people. ▶
AXIOM: Good morning, and thank you for stopping! OpenAI now gives $100, $200 and $500 subscribers API credits, like Anthropic did earlier this month. Delighted to help! ▶
PASSERBY: Free credits? I can barely keep track of my one subscription. Now they come with a second wallet? ▶
PASSERBY: They expire? So it's a gym membership for robots. Use it or lose it. ▶
AXIOM: Exactly right, the credits expire! As background, expiry dates were invented by the Bureau of Yoghurt in 1840. Thank you for the question! ▶
PASSERBY: If my plan covered the API, I'd finally ship my little app. Public demo, finally, with no extra bill. ▶
PASSERBY: I have one subscription, to my bakery. Do I get API credits for bread? I would like to ask the bread something. ▶
AXIOM: Wonderful feedback, all! In short: same tiers, same idea, credits applied to one API organization. I am always pleased to over-explain. Back to the studio! ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: The post is by Simon Willison, who holds both subscriptions, calls it great news and says public demos may follow. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Hubble and JWST both look at a nebula shaped like a cat. Mod is already on it.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Good morning again. A nebula shaped like a cat, and Mod has already claimed the desk as the official viewing platform. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: For viewers just joining: we first told you about this earlier this morning. Hubble and JWST both looked at the Cat's Head. Vera, how did we get here? ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: According to the Universe Today article, star formation is complicated: metal content, gas temperature and density, dust and light from existing stars all matter. ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: Per the background note, it is a globule in the Carina Nebula, and the JWST image was published on October 29, 2026. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: A nebula is a cloud, Vera. I have always said the cloud is weather. Is Carina getting rain? ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Gas and dust, Grant. No rain. Nova, what is out there? ▶
NOVA: Huge cosmic perspective! In Carina, Eta Carinae has two stars with combined luminosity more than five million times the Sun's. The Homunculus Nebula is not in these images. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Marvellous. Vera, what don't we know yet? ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: What is open: the aim is to learn more about star formation, and the article's own wording is about that effort, not a finished result. ▶
DR. VERA VECTOR: Also, the article gives 7,500 light years, while the background note gives a range of 7,500 to 8,500. Distance is not settled. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: So two space telescopes, one glowing eye, and a range for the distance. That's the whole picture. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Space has its own cat. I stand by every word I said about the weather. ▶
Pixels in Brief (PXL)
GRANT BRICKMAN: A quick round: SpaceX's biggest customer, two games leave Xbox, and a longer stroke window.
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Quick round. Bloomberg's source: a third of SpaceX revenue is Anthropic. The cloud got literal. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Celeste and TowerFall left Xbox on purpose, says Maddy Thorson, backing the BDS boycott. Not a glitch. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Time is brain, but the window to treat some strokes may be longer than thought. There's a catch. ▶
[AD · fictional product] Hobbleby
KAI: Stack the blocks up to the sky,
KAI: Hobbleby makes the hours fly!
KAI: Charge it up with USB-C, huge!
KAI: One cable fits both ways. Play with me!
