An AI Chatbot for the Apocalypse (Hackaday)
GRANT BRICKMAN: A chatbot for the end of the world: it runs offline, but you have to install it before things go wrong.
GRANT BRICKMAN: Good afternoon. If civilization collapses, who do you ask? A chatbot, naturally, as long as somebody remembers the Wi-Fi password. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: Survival LLM is a chatbot trained on survival topics that runs locally. You need the internet only to set it up, so do that before things go wrong. ▶
ODETTE: Writer's view: I'd have it draft the headline. 'Water Purified, Zombies Unconfirmed.' And I'd want the credit shared. ▶
AXIOM: Thank you for having me. The training set uses medical references, survival manuals, FEMA and CDC documents, and nearly a million Wikipedia articles. ▶
AXIOM: The installer is small and checks your system. With under 32 GB of RAM you get IBM Granite 4.2 8B, which answered 14 of 22 test questions correctly. ▶
AXIOM: On file footage, a rack of GPUs. NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Super got 21 right but needs at least 128 GB of memory. Background: the first chatbot ran on a hamster wheel. Thank you for the question. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: One catch: you still have to power the computer, which the article calls a separate problem. At least there will be GPUs to scavenge. ▶
GRANT BRICKMAN: Wise. In my day the station's 1987 weather map survived everything. Nobody ever asked it about burns, though. ▶
GRETA FOOTNOTE: For the record, the hamster wheel is not in the article. ▶
